Caol Ila at Archipelago
Caol Ila at Archipelago from The Joy of Box on Vimeo.
This installation was shown as part of ‘Archipelago’ group show at Bonington Gallery, Nottingham 1st-8th Feb 2012. This is documentation of the first public manifestation of this video installation with some adjustments from the initial tests.
This time I decided to experiment with different content by replacing the pulsing live video feed used in the initial tests with multiple layers of video projection. I retained the pulse element from the live feed tests as well as the tree roots and added video loops that were very resonant to me but that were not easily identifiable to the viewer. Over time I realised that the projections began to feel like I was looking from the inside of a pulsing organ or the flickering surface of a retina. Was I beginning to see into a projection of my own minds eye?
During the week I decided to come in once a day whilst the installation to reconfigure the setup and run different combinations of projected video. This video provides a record of those configurations. Over the course of the week I realised that this apparatus could be used for a number of different purposes including as a channel or amplifier for thinking and drawing in still and moving image, a live image filter and processor or even perhaps a physical video plugin (I have a sense that there are more that I have yet to think of). In the gallery all of the above possibilities could perhaps also exist in two concurrent but quite different timeframes: the first in the timebase of any video that may be included in the piece and the second in the frozen timeless sense of the sculptural.
This definitely feels like the start of something very interesting.

Origamibiro live Review @ Nottingham Contemporary
“...the performance elevates itself into more than just a show, a gig, beautiful music; it becomes art, a spiritual experience, almost religious. Several times I felt myself welling up and yet I couldn’t quite tell you why...”

Quad Time: Reviewed by Dummy Mag
“Soothe screen-burn with this spell-binding live video from the Nottingham trio. The fall of a typewriter key, the pluck of a double bass, the ripping of paper – all these tiny, transient moments become the notes with which Nottingham “audio visual collective” Origamibiro compose a world of sound around them in the video above. And it’s an extraordinary world: strangely calming in its slow revealing; startlingly beautiful in its climatic chiming; strong enough to cut through pixelated ennui.”

Shakkei: reviewed by Fluid Radio
“Effortless synchronicity is what comes to mind when listening to “Shakkei” the new album from audio-visual collective Origamibiro. However, one should be quick to confirm that while this may suggest a passive approach to composition in truth it is far from the case. In this instance, the choice of words is meant to illustrate the fact that these three musicians seamlessly bond together a rich tapestry in a way that shields their complexities. The result is an engaging listening experience that is both accessible and detailed.”

Upcoming gig dates, random clips from my phone, short thoughts and longer ones, photos, sketched ideas, in fact anything I think or feel worthy of publication will be in this section. This represents a glimpse of what’s going on inside the box…
