Shakkei: reviewed by Fluid Radio
“Effortless synchronicity is what comes to mind when listening to “Shakkei” the new album from audio-visual collective Origamibiro. However, one should be quick to confirm that while this may suggest a passive approach to composition in truth it is far from the case. In this instance, the choice of words is meant to illustrate the fact that these three musicians seamlessly bond together a rich tapestry in a way that shields their complexities. The result is an engaging listening experience that is both accessible and detailed.”

Shakkei: reviewed by Silent Ballet
“Everything is musical. The claim has been made by many avant-garde musicians, who tend to hear sounds as notes: a footfall, an engine, a screech. Yet not everything sounds like a song; one would be hard-pressed to find melody in the unadorned tones of a traffic jam or a children’s birthday party. Instead, one might discern hints or snatches: raw material, something to work with. This is the spirit in which Origamibiro approaches its art.”

Shakkei: The New Album By Origamibiro is out now
Its out! Its finally out!
buy it in all the available places now!
The new Origamibiro album - Shakkei - is out now. Co-released between Abandon Building Records in the US, Denizen Recordings here in the UK and p*dis in Japan, it will be the culmination of four years work since the last Origamibiro release on Expanding Records in 2007.
Shakkei sees Origamibiro’s music expand into new directions. This album also marks a significant point in their evolution as Origamibiro becomes a full blown audio-visual collective.
Originally a solo project for Tom Hill, Origamibiro began to grow as he enlisted new blood in the form of double bassist and all round multi-instrumentalist, Andy Tytherleigh, and video artist, The Joy of Box. They explored ways to expand out from Tom’s studio recordings into full blown live audio-visual performances and in the process found that their ideas and approaches were becoming closely intertwined.
The trio took time out to perform live and experiment with how this kind of music and visuals could be generated and performed live. 2009 saw them playing places like Paris, Rennes, London, Nottingham, The Big Chill Festival, Summer Sundae and The Dublin Fringe Festival, where they gained an award nomination for best production.
Through their studio experiments and live performances, Origamibiro have strived to produce music and images that are beautiful, generative and organic. They have fused their respective backgrounds together: bringing an intricate and diverse selection of instruments, elements of expanded cinema, soundtrack music, found objects and unorthodox devices.
The band are currently refining their set in preparation for new tour dates. Check the live dates menu for updates on gigs. Shakkei will be available for download through the usual online outlets and on CD from record stores in August.
